After Doctor Bannerjee’s death, his wife Jaya goes to live with Suchitra in the US. Their house in Delhi, A 46 Gulabganj, is kept boarded up and shut; waiting to be sold off. Apu eventually marries Shashank Chowdhry, a former student of Doctor Bannerjee. The two of them decide not to sell off the house and make A 46 Gulabganj their home. After moving back in, Apu relives the memories of her childhood and youth. The Tam Brahms and other short stories is a series of incidents of her life as narrated by her.
Aparajita Bannerjee, or Apu, is a writer, born and brought up in Delhi in the fictional neighborhood of Gulabganj. Her father, Doctor Bipin Chandra Banerjee, is a Professor of Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. Apu has a younger sister, Suchitra, who also studies medicine like their father. She is now settled with her husband and children in San Jose, US.
